Ballistic missile defense

Based on proven technology, Weibel long-range tracking radars play an important role in keeping assets safe from ballistic missile threats and are easy to deploy.

A critical security capability

Ballistic missile defense is a defensive capability to defend populations and territories against ballistic missile attacks, typically from rogue nations or terrorist organizations.

Extensive systems have been established by NATO for the early warning detection and identification of potentially destructive long-range missiles. Weibel Scientific provides state-of-the-art Doppler radar systems designed for use in BMD situations today and in the future.

Weibel’s long-range tracking radars are based on proven technology and have been used by the U.S. Navy since 1999 and by NASA since 2005. More than 40 countries, including the United States, currently use our radars when testing and deploying weapon systems. Accessibility We have developed our radar systems in careful consultation with U.S. and European defense requirements. Our BMD tracking radar is available to all allied nations and is well-suited to reinforce NATO’s ballistic missile defense system, as laid out in the European Phased Adaptive Approach or similar allied missile defense systems. Over many years, we have worked closely with the U.S. Department of Defense in developing long-range radar tracking technologies, but our systems are not restricted by the United States’ International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR).

Maximum precision

Our radar technology operates in the X-band of the electromagnetic spectrum, enhancing our system’s resolution and imaging capability. Not only can our systems see targets clearly, they can detect ascending ballistic missiles and then guide interceptors to eliminate a descending warhead.

Building on a strong history of developing robust, precise radars for tracking space objects and missiles, we have developed specialized missile defense radar systems that are designed to meet the advanced technological requirements associated with any potential missile threat.

The Gap Filling Tracking Radar (GFTR) series provides precise data and discrimination at very long ranges, extending the engagement envelope against ballistic missiles. These advanced capabilities can close gaps in the existing sensor grid against ballistic missiles.

The Ground Based Integrated Discrimination System (GBIDS) has been developed in partnership with Lockheed Martin and Terma. GBIDS provides long-range tracking, discrimination and identification capabilities.

Long-range accuracy Measuring accurately at ranges up to 4,000 km, the GFTR allows a BMD system to protect large areas. High precision over large distances means that missiles can be engaged reliably and accurately after they have been identified. Discrimination and identification The GFTR can simultaneously track and discriminate objects in a target cluster when a missile separates from the booster and the carrier splits into one or more warheads or debris. It can also resolve objects down to one meter apart and track objects with a velocity difference of less than one meter per second at a distance of more than 2,000 kilometers. This allows you to discriminate, for example, between a warhead and other non-threatening objects. Accurate discrimination increases the probability of hitting the warhead the first time.
Debris tracking Thanks to the radar’s accurate long-distance tracking ability, you can predict the debris area and reduce any collateral damage from fallout. Data collected from the GFTR allows you to track and collect debris. Radar data can be used to identify the type of incoming missile and increases both the discrimination capability and the likelihood of hitting the right object in one strike.

Rapid deployment
The GFTR is the most scalable and transportable radar solution for ballistic missile defense on the market. It can be easily scaled up, is simple to deploy and works both on land and at sea. It can also be fully operated remotely. The radar is easy to set up and tear down, and it can be powered up within minutes, significantly reducing strategic vulnerability.
